Raise awareness against sexual harassment

To denounce the sexual harassment of women in public transport, UN Women has installed a seat that reproduces the contours of the body of a man and his penis in the Mexico City metro. In front of the seat, a sign says “it is boring to travel here but it is nothing compared to the sexual violence that women experience in their daily journeys”.

In Mexico, more than 80% of women feel unsafe on public transport. In the capital, nine out of ten women are victims. According to UN Women, “sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence are a global problem that is still not very visible. Men often normalize the violence, women do not denounce it, and campaigns are insufficient to prevent it”.
